Sail arrived

The sail arrived. Was a nice day today so I rigged the sail for the first time.

I'm choosing to lace the sail to the mast. At least for the first few times out.

  1. Hi, Mike.

I just came across your build blog. She's a great looking boat!

It looks like you did your own materials gathering and cutting, and I'm assuming that you worked with plans you purchased from CLC. Are you able to offer a rough estimate of total costs for the entire project, including the sail and rig? I'm wondering how the costs would compare with purchasing the kits for hull and sail from CLC.

If you're able and willing, I'm also wondering of you'd provide a list of the tools and equipment required to complete the project.

Thanks much and congrats on the boat. Sullivan

    1. Hello Sullivan,
I intentionally did not track hours or cost. Having said that, I don't think I saved any money ordering material on my own compared to the kit. Mistakes and payments for multiple separate deliveries wiped out any potential cost savings over the kit. I would use CLC kit prices as a good estimate of total cost for the project.

I would recommend you buy Kulczycki’s book “Stitch-and-Glue Boatbuilding: How to Build Kayaks and Other Small Boats”. It contains a list of tools and supplies needed, bill of materials, plans (not full size), instruction manual, and just loads of advice for the Jimmy Skiff and several other boats. I did not find this book until about half way through my build. I wish I had it from the beginning.

But to answer your question I used: clamps, circular saw, orbital sander, saber saw, block plane, drill, handsaw, saw horses, tape measure, chalk line, borrowed a table saw, utility knife, hand held power planar, chip brushes, plastic gloves, and more clamps. Did I say clamps?

Good luck. If you proceed please send pictures of your build and feel free to ask any questions.

  2. Thanks for the prompt reply and the advice, Mike, including that about Kulczyki's book. It confirms my thoughts about going with a kit. If I do the build, I'll be sure to forward some pics. And I'll be looking for some sailing pics on your blog. Good luck.
